President of Tajikistan expresses concern over business closures in region

Local authorities were instructed to address the challenges confronting business development and attract foreign investment.

Speaking at the working meeting with the Sughd Region authorities, President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon expressed concern about the closure of 20 local enterprises in the first quarter of 2024. Another 20 industrial enterprises were liquidated, the press office of the President of Tajikistan reported.

Over the past year, regional output grew by only 6%, which, according to the President, does not reflect the strategy of the country to accelerate industrialization.

The President highlighted the need to more actively attract investment into the region and introduce advanced technologies into the industrial sector. Emomali Rahmon instructed local authorities to work harder to solve these problems and create favourable conditions for foreign investors.

The President also expressed concern about a drop in investment. Last year, Sughd Region received over 6 billion somoni in foreign investment, which is 32,8% less than in 2022. The cumulative level of direct investment decreased by 71,3% during the reporting period.
