New Deputy Prime Minister for Emergency Situations appointed in Kazakhstan

The Deputy Prime Minister will oversee the issues related to regional policy, housing and communal services, emergency preparedness and water management.

President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev offered his adviser Kanat Bozumbayev to take the post of Deputy Prime Minister. To this end, Bozumbayev will be relieved of his current duties to take on new roles, the press office of the President of Kazakhstan reported.

The newly appointed Deputy Prime Minister will oversee the issues related to regional policy, housing and communal services, emergency preparedness and water management.

These issues previously were within the purview of First Deputy Prime Minister Roman Sklyar. President Tokayev expressed dissatisfaction with poor performance of Sklyar and Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Nurzhan Nurzhigitov, who had failed to take timely flood mitigation measures.

Tokayev underscored the unacceptability of poor performance of local authorities and expressed concern about the lack of coordination between the centre and the regions. The President put forward the initiative to create a Republican Task Force led by the Prime Minister to enhance flood mitigation measures and ensure public safety and security.
