Kyrgyz authorities focus on strategic health system development

According to the President’s Administration, this will help modernise medical science and practice.

Prime Minister of Kyrgyzstan Akylbek Zhaparov delivered a speech at the International Medical Congress of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in Bishkek. In his speech, he emphasised the importance of the strategic development of Kyrgyzstan’s health system, the press office of the Government of Kyrgyzstan reported.

The Congress marked the first step towards strengthening health and medical cooperation among the SCO Member States, Zhaparov said. Building better healthcare partnerships is essential for developing medical practice and improving professional skills of health specialists.

Zhaparov reported on ongoing health sector reforms. Over the past three years, health care financing has doubled, reaching 38 billion soms in 2023 compared to 19 billion soms in 2019. Significant work is being done to upgrade healthcare facilities and build modern hospitals, including a tuberculosis hospital, a perinatal centre, etc.

On the initiative of the President of Kyrgyzstan, kidney transplant surgeries began to be performed in the country in 2023. $1 million was earmarked from the President’s Fund to purchase special equipment. In 2024, first-ever liver transplant surgeries will be performed with the support of Turkey in the Republic.
