Tajikistan and Iran to complete construction on Istiklol tunnel

Construction on the tunnel started in 2003 and was to be completed in 2022, but the project deadline had to be extended.

Minister of Transport of Tajikistan Azim Ibrohim held talks with the top managers and specialists of the Iranian construction companies Sangob and Farob, which are contracted to repair and modernise the Istiklol road tunnel. The parties agreed to speed up the construction of this facility, the press office of the Ministry of Transport of the Republic reported.

The parties reviewed the joint work done and discussed the progress of the implementation of the agreement on the second construction stage of the Istiklol road tunnel, which was signed between Tajikistan and Iran in January 2021.

As part of the project, it is planned to install ventilation, lighting, early detection and fire safety systems.

Construction on the Istiklol tunnel started in 2003 under the agreement between Tajikistan and Iran. The initial project cost was $39 million; the Government of Tajikistan is to contribute $7.8 million, and Iran is to provide $10 million in grants and $21.2 million in loans.
