International Union for Conservation of Nature opens representative office in Uzbekistan

IUCN Director-General Grethel Aguilar said the countries must come together to tackle environmental threats.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature opened its representative office in Uzbekistan. The office is located at the Central Asian University for the Study of Environment and Climate Change, known as the Green University, in Tashkent. Minister of Environment of Uzbekistan Aziz Abdukhakimov and IUCN Director General Grethel Aguilar attended the event, the press office of the Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate of Uzbekistan reported.

Aguilar noted that today the major challenges are facing the planet, such as the threat to biodiversity, air pollution and climate change. She underscored the need to promote international cooperation to tackle these challenges. The IUCN Director General said the regional ecosystem protection projects are currently being implemented in Central Asia.

Aziz Abdukhakimov highlighted the importance of strengthening cooperation with the International Union for Conservation of Nature for Uzbekistan. Speaking at the opening ceremony, he noted that the authorities of Uzbekistan jointly with IUCN are implementing the projects for environmental protection, land restoration, climate change mitigation and adaptation among others, which contributes to achieving the sustainable environmental situation in the region. The opening of the IUCN Office in Tashkent will facilitate interaction with the Central Asian countries, partners and the expert community.
