Kazakhstan to switch to single time zone in 2024

Kazakhstan is preparing to change the time zones on its entire territory.

The Ministry of Trade and Integration of Kazakhstan has drafted amendments to the Decree of the Government On the procedure for calculating the time on the territory of the Republic of Kazakhstan. If this draft is adopted, the akimats from Astana to the East Kazakhstan regions will move local time back one hour, TASS reports.

«A draft decree of the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan has been developed. It proposes setting up a single time zone UTC+5 throughout the country on the night of February 29, 2024 to March 1, 2024 at 00:00,» the Ministry of Trade and Integration of Kazakhstan, headed by Arman Shakkaliev, stated.

Currently, there are two time zones in Kazakhstan: UTC+5 and UTC+6. However, residents of the regions, including Kostanay, Akmola, North Kazakhstan, Karaganda, Pavlodar, Almaty, Turkestan, Zhambyl, Ulytau and Zhetysu, and the cities of Astana, Almaty and Shymkent in fact live one hour ahead of their geographical time in the administrative time zone UTC+6.

The draft decree is available on the Open Legal and Regulatory Acts portal until December 22 this year.
