Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kyrgyzstan takes part in Nepal’s mountain forum

The Minister of Foreign Affairs noted that Kyrgyzstan and Nepal, as mountainous countries, are well aware of their vulnerability to climate change.

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kyrgyzstan Jeenbek Kulubaev took part in the Roundtable at COP28, organised by Nepal in Dubai to discuss the climate crisis faced by mountainous countries and people. He emphasised the importance of understanding that climate change in mountain regions has its specifics, the Telegram channel of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kyrgyzstan reports.

The Ministers highlighted such urgent challenges as the intense melting of glaciers and glacier retreat. Jeenbek Kulubaev noted that this phenomenon has a negative impact on access to water resources that play a key role in the social and economic development, energy security and environmental stability of mountain regions.

“Kulubaev urged to join efforts to find ways to preserve glaciers and cooperate in protecting the water formation zones and promote increasing levels of funding for mountainous countries,” the press office reports the details of the speech of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kyrgyzstan.

Kulubaev informed about the measures being taken in Kyrgyzstan to solve the problems of mountainous regions. For example, these include the international forums on the conservation of the snow leopard, the creation of an informal Group of Friends of Mountain Countries at the UN and the adoption of the UN General Assembly resolutions on sustainable mountain development and glacier monitoring.
