Rahmon speaks about melting glaciers at forum in Dubai

Tajikistan has contributed to the International Fund for Glaciers Preservation.

Addressing the 28th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon expressed concern about the adverse impact of climate change on water resources.

He noted that rising temperatures are accelerating the melting of glaciers that are the source of 60 percent of Central Asia’s water supplies. Over the past decades, the number of glaciers in Tajikistan has decreased by more than 1,000, the press office of the President of Tajikistan reports.

In this regard, Tajikistan proposed adopting a resolution to declare 2025 as the International Year of Glaciers Preservation and observe March 21 as the World Day for Glaciers. The International Glacier Trust Fund was set up, to which Tajikistan has made its initial financial contribution and called on the international community and organisations to contribute to the Fund.

The President of Tajikistan expressed belief that the international community will help achieve other water goals and obligations.
