Smailov orders separate waste collection to be set up in Kazakhstan

The situation has deteriorated compared to the previous year.

Prime Minister of Kazakhstan Alikhan Smailov called on the regional authorities to widely set up a separate waste collection system, TASS reports.

The Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Kazakhstan presented the space monitoring data, according to which more than 5,600 illegal landfills were discovered in the country in 2022. Since the beginning of the year, from March to September, another 5,500 illegal landfills have been discovered. Administrative fines do not improve the situation, since for many people it is easier to pay a fine than to take their waste to a landfill site.

Smailov emphasised the need to change this approach and set up an effective waste management and disposal system. He noted that awareness raising activities conducted by local executive authorities are not sufficient, and not all residents know about construction debris landfills. Therefore, the separate waste collection, sorting, processing and disposal system needs to be set up widely.
