CIS to host Conference of the Parties to the CMS Convention for first time

The conservation of migratory species of wild animals will be discussed at the event, which will take place in Samarkand in 2024.

Uzbekistan will host the 14th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species (CMS) on February 12-17, 2024. This historic event will be the first one in the history of the Conference ever held on the territory of a CIS Member State, the press office of the Government of Uzbekistan reported to CentralAsia.news.

The CMS Convention, signed in 1979, has 133 Parties. It aims to to protect and conserve various migratory species throughout their range. Uzbekistan that ratified this document in 1998 is ready to take an active part in organising such a large-scale event.

The previous CMS Conference in India brought together more than 1,000 delegates from 131 countries. Holding a meeting on the territory of the CIS Member States is of historic significance for the Commonwealth and unique.

The 14th Meeting will bring together the high-level officials, including Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme Inger Andersen, Director General of the International Union for Conservation of Nature Grethel Aguilar, CEO and Chairperson of the Global Environment Facility Carlos Rodríguez, environment ministers from the Parties to the Convention and heads of the secretariats of international environmental treaties.
