President of Turkmenistan approves environmental proposals

The Regional Center for Climate Technology will open in Ashgabat. The city will hold a youth forum.

On August 31, during a government meeting, President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov heard a report on international cooperation in the field of climate change from Minister of Foreign Affairs Rashid Meredov. The leader of the country approved a number of proposals on environmental protection. This was reported by the state news agency «Turkmenistan: Today».

The minister noted the importance of opening the Center to address issues related to climate change. In this regard, he proposed to conclude a memorandum on the implementation of environmental programs with UNEP and the countries of the region.

Rashid Meredov also emphasized the expediency of developing a roadmap under the Paris Agreement. The diplomat added that Ashgabat could host a Youth Forum on Climate Change before the 18th Conference of Youth (COY-18) and the UN Conference (COP-28) in November.

At the upcoming 78th session of the UN General Assembly, Turkmenistan will propose to establish the Regional Center for Climate Technology in Central Asia.

In addition, Ashgabat will put forward initiatives to develop a global strategy for the zero growth of greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and the Caspian Environmental Initiative. The republic will also propose to create the United Nations Regional Council on water use issues in Central Asia with headquarters in Ashgabat.
