Tajikistan bans import of used cars

The authorities of Tajikistan justified the ban by harmful emissions from used cars.

The Government of Tajikistan decided to ban the import of cars manufactured before 2013. The new regulations cancel the previous restriction, which applied to cars older than 2005, the press office of the President of Tajikistan reported.

In accordance with the document approved by the President, the Government instructed “to ban the import of vehicles manufactured before 2013 (the commodity positions 8702, 8703, 8704 and 8705 in the Commodity Nomenclature of Foreign Economic Activity)”. This restriction applies to cars intended to transport passengers and goods, passenger cars and specialized vehicles.

The Resolution also authorises the Customs Service to ensure control, customs clearance and registration of imported cars in compliance with the new regulations, together with the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

One of the main reasons why Tajikistan bans the import of used cars is a large number of such cars on the roads of Tajikistan, which are the main source of harmful emissions into the atmosphere. The decision aims to reduce the environmental impact and improve air quality in the country.
