The Tuyuk-Suu uranium tailing dump in Min-Kush village in Zhumgal district, Naryn Region of Kyrgyzstan will be reclaimed. The work has started; reclamation measures are being taken jointly with the Rosatom State Corporation of Russia and the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Kazakhstan, the press office of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic reported.
Tuyuk-Suu is one of four uranium tailing dumps in Min-Kush, along with Taldy-Bulak, Kak and Dalneye. According to experts, reclamation measures are being taken to prevent a landslide nearby that directly endangers environmental safety of the region.
«If the landslide occurs, it could block the narrow valley of the Tuyuk-Suu River that flows into the Min-Kush, Kokomeren and Naryn Rivers. This can lead to the failure of the tailing dump and the release of radioactive substances,» the press office reports.
Reclamation measures have been completed at the Kak facility, where the tailing dump was covered with a protective layer that ensures reliable protection. The Taldy-Bulak tailing dump will be moved to the Dalneye facility, and this work is expected to be completed by autumn 2023.
Before the work started, a meeting with local residents took place. The majority of residents of Min-Kush village approved reclamation measures.
