Tajikistan bans thin polyethylene bags

A rise in prices for goods should not be accepted.

Tajikistan will ban the import and use of bags made of polyethylene film of up to 15 microns of thickness. The Khovar National News Agency of Tajikistan reports that the new rule will come into force on January 1, 2025. A representative of the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan Naim Nematzoda made this statement.

Exceptions can be made for handless polyethylene bags used for packaging goods and biodegradable plastic bags.

To implement this ban, the Ministry of Industry and Technology jointly with the Committee for Investments and State Property Management will take measures to launch domestic production of eco-friendly packaging materials such as cardboard, paper, fabric, ceramics and biodegradable polymer materials.

Nematzoda stressed that the new rule will not entail a rise in prices, as the ban at the first stage will only apply to the import and use of a small number of bags made of polyethylene film of up to 15 microns of thickness.
