Aral Sea Region in Uzbekistan to be zone of environmental innovations

The authorities of the Republic are planning to work on the project jointly with the UN.

Minister of Ecology of Uzbekistan Aziz Abdukhakimov held a working meeting with Director of the United Nations Development Programme’s (UNDP) Regional Bureau for Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States Ivana Živković. The key issues under discussion included the prospects for turning the Aral Sea Region into a zone of environmental innovations in accordance with a special Resolution adopted by the UN General Assembly on the initiative of President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev, the press office of the Government of Uzbekistan reported to CentralAsia.News.

Discussing joint environmental projects and new environmental initiatives, the interlocutors emphasised the importance of transiting to a green economy, expanding the introduction of IT technologies and raising environmental awareness.

Abdukhakimov and Živković noted the importance of measures to improve the environmental situation in the region and evaluated the progress of the UN towards advancing sustainable development in Aral Sea Region.

The Director of the UNDP Regional Bureau for Europe and the CIS expressed readiness to take part in the upcoming events, including the 14th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals and the 25th session of the General Assembly of the World Tourism Organization.
