75th anniversary of UN Peacekeeping celebrated in Astana

Representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Defence of Kazakhstan, the UN Office and foreign diplomats attended the anniversary event.

On May 26, a solemn event marking the 75th anniversary of the first peacekeeping mission of the United Nations took place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan, the press office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic reported.

Representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Defence of Kazakhstan and the UN Office and officials of the foreign embassies accredited in Kazakhstan attended the event.

First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Kairat Umarov noted that cooperation with the United Nations in ensuring global and regional security is a crucial aspect of the foreign policy of Kazakhstan. Kazakhstan is ready to continue to support UN peacekeeping initiatives.

Noting Kazakhstan’s active role in the UN’s activities, UN Resident Coordinator for Kazakhstan Michaela Friberg-Storey emphasised the high professional level of the armed forces personnel of the country.

Head of the Department of International Cooperation of the Ministry of Defence of Kazakhstan Olzhas Khusainov, the members of the peacekeeping forces of Kazakhstan, who had taken part in UN peacekeeping operations, and foreign diplomats spoke at the event.

The participants observed a minute of silence in memory of the UN peacekeepers who were killed while on mission.
