Turkmenistan-Iran turnover rises 300%

This was stated by Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Ashgabat Gholam Abbas Arbab Khales.

The head of the diplomatic mission of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Turkmenistan Gholam Abbas Arbab Khales said that total trade between the two countries had risen 300% since the end of August 2020, compared to the same period last year, the IRNA News Agency reported on January 14.

The Ambassador noted that the two countries had resumed trade flows after the border control posts that were temporarily closed due to the coronavirus outbreak opened. He emphasised that imports and exports carried by road and rail had increased markedly.

Gholam Abbas Arbab Khales added that the borders between the countries remained opened thanks to constructive dialogues between the leaders of Turkmenistan and Iran, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and Hassan Rouhani, as well as talks between experts from the two countries.

As was reported, the borders between Iran and Turkmenistan were closed to prevent the spread of coronavirus infection. In early December, the Turkmenistan authorities opened three of the four checkpoints on the border with the Islamic Republic of Iran.

On June 8, 2020, a new road bridge across the Tejen River opened at the Sarakhs-Sarakhs border control post.
