OSCE Representative Teresa Ribeiro commends freedom of media in Kyrgyzstan

She raised this issue during a meeting with Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic Ruslan Kazakbaev in Vienna.

On October 1, the capital of Austria hosted a meeting between Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic Ruslan Kazakbayev and Representative of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe on Freedom of the Media Teresa Ribeiro. The parties discussed the freedom of speech in the Central Asian republic, the press office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported.

Kazakbayev noted that there was no censorship in the country, and there existed no obstacles to registration of the media. Moreover, no cases of murder or violent actions against journalists had been reported in the country.

He reminded that Kyrgyzstan had risen 19 places in the World Press Freedom Index produced by Reporters Without Borders as compared to 2018, taking 79th place out of 180 states.

The OSCE Representative commended the freedom of media in the Kyrgyz Republic. Investigative journalism deserved special attention, she said. She promised the Minister to help fight disinformation and conduct training sessions for Kyrgyz journalists.
