President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev held a meeting on the development of the electric power industry until 2035. Over the past 8 years, electricity production has increased by 38%, reaching 81.5 billion kilowatt-hours, the press office of the President of Uzbekistan reported.
The facilities with a total capacity of 11.2 GW were put into operation, and the share of the private sector in electricity generation stood at 24%. The share of green energy increased to 16%.
As household income increased by 1.6 times and household electricity consumption grew by 21 billion kilowatt-hours, electric power infrastructure needs to be developed. By 2030, Uzbekistan’s population will reach 41 million, and the economy will grow by 1.5 times. Uzbekistan will increase electricity production to 117 billion kilowatt-hours by 2030 and to 135 billion by 2035 to meet the demand.
The long-term programme that envisages building power plants and energy storage facilities was presented at the meeting. It is planned to build about 7,000 km of electricity networks and speed up power grid digitalisation to maintain balance between regions. The programme will require $4 billion in investment for the next 5 years.
