The Supreme Court of Kyrgyzstan posted for public discussion the draft law on postponing the introduction of jury trials. This jury system that was supposed to start operating on January 1, 2025, is not ready to launch because some issues remain unresolved, Sputnik reports.
The main problem is the lack of funding. The jury system requires 1.19 billion soms to be established, which are not provided for in the budget. Moreover, necessary infrastructure has not been built up, and the jury lists have not been compiled so far.
Chairman of the Supreme Court Mederbek Satyev proposes addressing funding and infrastructure challenges first, including digitalization of the jury system, in his justification note. The proposal to pilot the jury system in some regions of the country has to be abandoned, since such an approach would violate the right to equality.
The draft law will be under public discussion until January 24. Then, the document will be finalised with suggested changes and additions.
