Uzbekistan plans to develop a comprehensive strategy to reduce plastic pollution for 2025-2027 as part of the draft state programme. The key provision of the programme is the ban on plastic bags starting 2027 and a transition to eco-friendly alternatives, Gazeta.uz reports.
The Government intends to restrict the use of harmful chemicals in plastic products and set the mandatory standards for the use of recycled plastics.
The state programme will be drafted by September and submitted to the Cabinet of Ministers for consideration by November 2025.
Particular attention is paid to establishing the system for plastic packaging collection and disposal. Manufacturers and importers must open collection points for plastic containers or pay a recycling fee. The initiative aligns with global trends — over 100 countries have reduced the use of single-use plastic items.
