President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Japarov announced the plans to address the electrical energy deficit, currently estimated at 3.9 billion kWh. The President noted that the deficit is exacerbated by the large-scale construction of social facilities and industrial enterprises, Kabar reports.
Over the past 4 years, 373 schools and many other facilities have been built in the country, which has driven in electricity demand growth. However, electricity tariffs remain low: while a cost price is 2.72 soms, the population pays 1.1 soms, and 69,000 families pay the preferential electricity rate of 0.55 soms.
The President urged to be more energy efficient, in particular at government institutions and for street lighting.
The key project that will help solve the problem is the 1860MW Kambarata-1 hydropower plant, the launch of which will enable Kyrgyzstan not only to meet domestic demand, but also to export electricity after 2030.
