The topographic and legal working groups of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan finalised the draft document on national boundary delimitation. They signed the protocol following the meeting, which took place in Batken on December 1-7, the press office of the Government of Kyrgyzstan reported.
Significant progress became possible after the meeting between Chairmen of the State Committees for National Security of the two countries Saimumin Yatimov and Kamchybek Tashiev on December 4. They instructed the working groups to finalise the documents.
Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan began delimitating the border in 2002, but this process was slow for a long time; the two countries have agreed on half of the 972 km-border by 2022. The uncertainty was a recurrent source of conflicts between residents of border areas over access to water, land and pastures. The situation changed in the autumn of 2022, when meetings began to be held regularly, alternately in each of the two countries.
