Uzbekistan allocates about 4.8 million hectares for vegetables and cereals

Almost half of the allocated area is to be used for growing fruits, vegetables, gourds, melons, legumes and potatoes.

President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev reviewed the proposals on achieving food security of the country. Action plans to develop the agricultural sector and a new food security monitoring system were presented for review, the press office of the President of Uzbekistan reported.

Next year, agricultural crops will occupy an area of 4.8 million hectares, of which 2 million hectares will be allocated for potatoes, legumes, fruits, vegetables, gourds and melons.

The authorities plan to keep records of 10 main types of primary food products. The system will provide information on fresh produce and stockpiles for the domestic market by district.

The distribution of 260,000 hectares of land among 800,000 citizens and the development of household plots using the Saykhunabad practice were the important aspects to achieve food security. These measures helped create new jobs, particularly for young people, increase agricultural production and stabilize food prices.
