The opening ceremony of the Regional Centre of Chemical, Biological, Radiation and Nuclear Protection and Safety took place in Tajikistan. The institution was set up under the National Academy of Sciences on the initiative of President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon, the press office of the President of Tajikistan reported.
The large-scale project required substantial capital investment — the construction and equipment costs totalled about 47 million somoni, or $4.4 million.
The scientific institution houses16 innovative research laboratories specialising in various areas, including chemistry and biology. Particular attention is given to the creation of advanced immunology, virology and nuclear forensics stations.
The importance of this facility is based on not only by the national interests of Tajikistan, but also by the needs of the Central Asian region. The Centre plans to provide a wide range of laboratory services to neighbouring states, which will strengthen regional control of hazardous substances and enhance security.
The key task of the new institution is to conduct comprehensive research and diagnostics of substances that pose a potential threat to regional security.
