Archaeologists unearth rare ancient building in Uzbekistan

Scientists plan to complete the historical site study in October, after which it will be conserved for the winter season.

Archaeologists made a rare discovery of an ancient building with columns and arches in Namangan. This is the first archaeological find of its kind over the past 50 years, the press office of the Namangan Region khokimiyat reported.

Excavation work is being carried out in the historical settlement of Akhsikent on the right bank of the Syrdarya River; it occupies an area of over 100 hectares.

Scientists came across a mysterious road at a depth of 4 metres, and after removing over 10,000 cubic metres of soil, they unearthed a corridor with 12 steps.

Two unique arches were found at a distance of 7 metres from the corridor, which, according to archaeologists, may be connected with the main corridor. All the corridors are arched and made of brick, which evokes associations with the marble halls of the metro.

Archaeologists discovered almost intact washbasins, a floor heating system and ceramic pipes. Scientists plan to complete the historical site study in October and conserve the building for the winter. Professor Abdulhamid Anorboev, who heads the Akhsikent expedition, noted that closing the site in October will help prevent damage. If construction work is not completed on time, specialists will have to remove soil again.

As reported, the National Geographic TV channel is making a documentary about this archaeological site.
