The President of the Republic reported that over the past 70 years, the area of glaciers in Kyrgyzstan has decreased by 16%.

President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Japarov called on his counterparts to step up cooperation in climate change at the Central Asia-Germany Summit, the press office of the President of Kyrgyzstan reported.

In his speech, Japarov noted that in recent years, Central Asia has been playing an increasing role globally. He emphasised that regional and interregional integration is a key element of the common future.

Japarov expressed belief that consistent collaboration between Kyrgyzstan and Germany can boost investment and trade partnerships. He noted the tremendous potential of Kyrgyzstan in green energy and metal mining, including rare-earth elements.

The President underscored the need for cooperation on climate change, noting that over the past 70 years, the area of glaciers in Kyrgyzstan has decreased by 16%. Japarov focused on the shortage of funds to achieve the Paris Climate Agreement goals and the lack of opportunities for broad public financing of climate and environmental measures. In this regard, he proposed exchanging public debt for green projects as a new mechanism for climate and environmental project financing.
