Tajikistan to host first international conference on glaciers

The event will be organised jointly with the Aga Khan Agency for Habitat (AKAH), with the financial support of the Government of Switzerland.

Tajikistan will host the International Conference «Glacier and Glacial Lake Monitoring — Hazard Management» on August 26-31. The event is organised by the Agency for Hydrometeorology of the Committee for Environmental Protection of the Republic of Tajikistan and the Aga Khan Agency for Habitat (AKAH), with the financial support of the Government of Switzerland, ASIA Plus reports.

The conference is part of the Adaptive and Resilient Communities in their Habitat (ARCH) Project. Experts will gather in Dushanbe and participate in field events in the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO).

The conference will help experts, including foreign ones, present their studies and projects on monitoring glacial lake outbursts and mudflows. Participants will discuss methods for preventing and mitigating risks associated with these natural hazards.

Furthermore, participants will learn about critical mudflow events and measures to mitigate their impacts. They will also discuss risk awareness strategies for local communities and cross-sectoral climate resilience planning.
