The AI facial recognition system was introduced in Almaty and Atyrau, Tengrinews.kz reports. Prosecutor General of Kazakhstan Berik Asylov informed about the innovation on social media.
Prosecutors review CCTV footage recorded in crowded places to enhance prosecutorial supervision over the search for fugitives. This year, they have recognised and detained 53 fugitives. Now, they use AI in their work, but so far only in Almaty and Atyrau.
Since August, CCTV cameras in these cities have been using an AI-based technology to identify fugitive wanted for crimes, debtors and missing persons.
«2 persons who are hiding from the police and 2 persons who went missing were identified within 2 days,» the Prosecutor General reported.
Asylov added that AI can recognise even those whose appearance has changed significantly. He ordered that this system be introduced in all the regions.
According to the Prosecutor General’s Office of Kazakhstan, over 9,000 people are currently wanted, including 2,200 criminals and 2,000 missing persons.
