The Asian Development Bank (ADB) approved a $30 million grant to enhance maternal and child healthcare service in Tajikistan. The funds will be used to build and modernise health care facilities in Ayni, Darvaz and Dangara districts, the press office of the Asian Development Bank reported.
The grant will support the construction of a 100-bed central district hospital in Darvoz, a 40-bed maternity hospital in Ayni and an 80-bed maternity hospital in Dangara. These health care facilities will be stuffed with state-of-the-art medical equipment. With the aim of ensuring proper inventory and maintenance of medical equipment, the grant will implement a digital asset management system (OpenMEDIS). The local medical staff will be trained to operate it.
A portion of the funds will be spent on an information and awareness raising campaign among the population aimed at improving maternal and child health knowledge and supporting outreach that will encourage seeking health care services.
ADB Director General for Central and West Asia Yevgeniy Zhukov said, «Tajikistan has achieved laudable health improvements over the past 20 years, including increased life expectancy and significantly lower maternal mortality.» However, the country still needs support in this area, and the Asian Development Bank is ready to provide this assistance, Zhukov emphasised.
