The weak coastal protection structures on the Pyanj River in Tajikistan pose a serious threat to over 80,000 residents of Khatlon Region, particularly residents of Farkhor district, where the settlements may be flooded, ASIA Plus reported.
The residents note that the rise in the water level in the Pyanj River was recorded in 1973, but at that time it did not pose a threat to the settlements. Currently, the situation has changed, and the river represents a potential threat to households.
The authorities of the region and the Republic have taken specific measures to monitor the situation: a task force and a special commission led by the Chairman of Farkhor district were set up. Work is being conducted around the clock to reinforce the coastal protection structures with boulders brought from the nearby mountains.
Chairman of Farkhor district Zarif Naziri emphasised that over 8,000 houses will be flooded if the coastal protection structures are destroyed. Water is approaching the settlements, and strong water flows are threatening to destroy the coastal protection structures.
