Kyrgyz Parliament postpones discussion of smog in Bishkek

Though it promised that the problem of smog would be discussed after the New Year holidays, Zhogorku Kenesh did not include it on the agenda.

On January 15, a parliamentarian Dastan Bekeshev raised the issue of delays in discussing smog in the capital city at the Zhogorku Kenesh meeting. Though the Speaker of Parliament promised on December 26 that this problem would be discussed after the New Year holidays, it was not included on the agenda, Kloop reports.

Addressing Speaker Nurlanbek Turgunbek uulu, Bekeshev emphasised that residents of Bishkek discuss smog every day and expect the authorities to take decisive action. The Speaker of Parliament assured that this problem would be discussed next week.

The severity of the problem is confirmed by the fact that the assurances of Minister of Energy Taalaibek Ibraev in October about the lack of smog this winter were not confirmed. Though the authorities reported on the elimination of the main pollution sources, Bishkek remains on the list of the most polluted cities. The attempts of the Ministry of Natural Resources to explain the situation by faulty sensors are refuted by numerous photos of smog posted by residents on social media.
