Tajikistan is completing the development of a Roadmap for the construction of disaster-resistant housing facilities, Head of the Main Department for Population and Territory Protection under the Committee of Emergency Situations and Civil Defence Jamshed Kamolzoda said. The project is to be completed by the end of 2024, Asia-Plus reports.
The initiative is being implemented as part of the National Disaster Risk Management Programme with the support of the Asian Development Bank. The project implies an integrated approach to building earthquake-proof houses, with a special focus on rural areas, and includes measures to promote professional competencies and technical potential.
The key aspect of the Programme is to provide recommendations for enhancing the seismic response of existing residential and public buildings. The pilot project envisages training local residents to apply these recommendations in practice.
According to seismologists, even a 5-6 magnitude earthquake can cause severe damage to buildings built without compliance with building codes. Buildings without a foundation and seismic belt built from local materials are particularly vulnerable.
