Kyrgyz gymnasia to be transformed into regular schools

According to the Minister of Education and Science of Kyrgyzstan, the new law makes this kind of educational institutions unnecessary.

Speaking at a press conference in Bishkek, Minister of Education and Science of Kyrgyzstan Dogdurkul Kendirbaeva announced that all schools in the country will be stripped of the status of a gymnasium. These measures are aimed at providing equal educational opportunities to all schoolchildren, Bilim AKI Press reports.

Kendirbaeva clarified that the new education system will exclude the gradation of educational institutions by status. This system caused discontent among the parents who wanted their children to study at schools with special conditions.

The Minister emphasised that children should study at the school of their place of residence, and international practice testifies to the benefits of such a system.

A transition period is envisaged for the schools that have the status of a gymnasium. They will continue to operate for some time, but their status will not be prolonged. The new Law on Education adopted in 2023 provides for 3 levels of school education: primary education, basic education and secondary education, while the previous law provided for lycea and gymnasia.
