Tajikistan refutes rumours about freedom violations

The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs emphasised that some media outlets are spreading unverified and unsubstantiated information.

Tajikistan has begun designing the national clothing for women and girls that will comply with the requirements of Islam. This statement was made by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdurakhim Kholikzoda, Sputnik reports.

This initiative caused lively discussion following the recent law that bans clothing that does not conform to national culture. Rumours about human rights violations and restrictions on religious freedom in the country have begun spreading on social media.

Kholikzoda said these rumours are unsubstantiated and do not correspond to reality. He emphasised that Tajik women have always worn clothing that meets the requirements of Sharia. Furthermore, he noted that some media outlets are spreading the content based on unverified and incorrect information. The Deputy Minister emphasised that Tajik women have worn clothing for many centuries that meets the requirements of Sharia and reflects local customs and geographical features.

Chairman of the Committee on Religious Affairs Sulaymon Davlatzoda emphasised that the new law does not violate the rights of followers of Islam. He noted that no complaint on the adoption of this law has been submitted.
