U.S. Department of State announces funds to support journalists in Kazakhstan

Over $100,000 are to be allocated to implement the project.

The U.S. State Department is ready to allocate up to $101,000 for a programme aimed at developing a more balanced information environment in Kazakhstan, RT reports.

The grant programme will envisage that the potential contractors will engage with local journalists, students, lawyers and law enforcement officials in several areas of assistance. According to the authors of the project, this programme will help Kazakhstan move forward on the path of «striving for democracy».

The document states that «the project aims to promote the standards of professional journalism and provide adequate legal protection where necessary». Its objectives are to train media actors on media laws and increase journalists’ access to legal protection.

The programme budget must not exceed $101,000, and funding can be provided to for-profit, non-profit and non-governmental organisations, think tanks and educational institutions.
