Development of urban infrastructure discussed in capital of Kazakhstan

The President focused on the urgent problems of modernising urban infrastructure of the capital city and improving living standards of its residents during the meeting.

On January 31, President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev held a government meeting on the development of urban infrastructure of the capital city, the press office of the President of Kazakhstan reported.

The President noted that the rapid growth of the population of Astana that is projected to grow to 2.5 million by 2030 necessitates taking specific measures to modernise transport infrastructure, improve the comfort of living, solve the housing problems and address the issues in education, healthcare and aesthetics.

The President said special attention should be paid to gas and heating supply to the population, road infrastructure problems, delays in construction of roads and bridges and the availability of public transport in new districts of Astana. The President highlighted the need to speed up construction of an elevated light rail transit.

Dwelling on the problems of deceived equity holders and the violations by construction contractors that do not fulfil their obligations, Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev said the state should tighten regulations in this area.

The President highlighted the need to address the problems in such areas as beautification and tree planting in city streets, parks and embankments, creation of pedestrian zones and improvement of courtyards in new districts. The priority tasks include construction of new schools, improvement of the quality and access to health services, particularly for children, attraction of education and upbringing professionals to the capital city, encouragement of entrepreneurship and improvement of the welfare of residents of the suburbs of Astana.
