Tokayev orders effective implementation of judicial reforms

The President thoroughly reviewed the work done by the Supreme Judicial Council in 2022.

On January 30, President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev met with Chairman of the Supreme Judicial Council Denis Shipp, who reported on the work done by the Council in 2022, the current situation in the judicial system and the fulfilment of the President’s instructions, the press office of the President of Kazakhstan reported to CentralAsia.news.

The President was informed that due to measures taken to renew the judiciary, the number of candidates who were recommended for appointment exceeded the number of judges who had left the system in 2022.

With the aim of fulfilling the President’s instruction to attract experts to the judicial system, for the first time a competition was held for lawyers in certain areas of law, who can be appointed as judges of the regional court, bypassing the district level.

Shipp reported on the plans for institutional enhancement of the Council and transfer of court personnel issues under its competence, as well as the modernisation of the institution of disciplinary liability of judges. He said further measures would be taken to improve judicial selection and ensure a transparent hiring process.

Commenting on the report, Tokayev gave specific instructions to the Chairman of the Council and emphasised the importance of effectively implementing judicial reforms.
