The leaders of the two states discussed the prospects for building up partnerships in key areas and signed a package of bilateral documents.

On January 27, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev discussed with President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Japarov major aspects of strategic cooperation during his state visit to Kyrgyzstan, the press office of the President of Uzbekistan reports.

The leaders of the two states exchanged views on the current state and prospects of trade, economic, investment and political cooperation and the implementation of joint projects in the hydropower, transport, communications, agricultural and mining industries.

The issues under discussion included the approaches to building up partnerships within international organisations and concerting efforts to ensure regional security.

The government delegations of the two states joined the talks between Mirziyoyev and Japarov.

Shavkat Mirziyoyev noted that cooperation between the two friendly states is developing dynamically, which makes it possible to hold bilateral meetings on a regular basis at various levels and identify the prospects for building up cooperation in key areas.

Particular attention was paid to successful partnerships in the trade and economic sectors. In 2022, bilateral trade increased to $1.3 billion, and more than 300 joint ventures were set up. The two leaders discussed the possibility of mutual supplies of goods to replace imports from third countries, the opening of shopping centres in the capital cities and the development of new investment projects in the automotive, mining, mineral processing, household appliances and building materials industries.

The major areas of cooperation also include the transport, communications and energy sectors. In this regard, the parties agreed to continue to jointly build the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway, the Andijan-Osh-Irkeshtam highway and the Kambarata hydropower plant.

Following the high-level talks, 25 bilateral documents were signed, including the Declaration on Strategic Partnerships, the Protocol on the Exchange of Instruments of Ratification of the Treaty on Certain Sections of the Uzbek-Kyrgyz State Border, the Strategic Trade and Economic Partnerships Programme for 2023-2025 and the Agreement on Cooperation in emergency prevention, preparedness and response.
